AR002802

Please remember that March 1 we will be billing you for your once a year school donation fee of $200.00. This money goes a long way in assuring that we retain staff, enahnce our materials and continue to provide the best early childhood educational facility possible.

We’ve been waiting for you

When I think about the process parents go through in looking for a preschool I can understand understand how overwhelmed you all feel. We are in a time where every school has a waiting list, creating fear that if you are not on one of these “lists” , you may not get “in”. How did this happen? Is it supply and demand, is it to make work easier for the preschool directors, or was it created to the scare parents into believing there is a shortage of good preschool programs?

While all of these reasons apply, my hope is to combat this fear based society we rotate in and have a no waiting list environment at La Canada Preschool. Here is where we want to be the change we would like to see in the world. Why not create environments where parents feel supported and wanted from the get go. Every year we place families in a friendly, relaxed manner, accepting their registration on a first come first basis. The process reflects a respect for the families we serve by accepting everyone who wants to be here, without the fear of exclusion because you are not on a list.

Preschool placement needs to support families with inclusion based on acceptance when placement is needed. It sends a message when we ask parents to wait to be chosen, when we say that you were not on the list in time, and when we create more fear for parents to deal with. Isn’t it enough that you all are faced with the overwhelming stress of raising children? My hope is that at La Canada Preschool, we are breaking the mold by saying welcome, come on in, we’ve been waiting for you:)

Topics for Parenting 101 Class

Wednesday April 14 we will begin offering our Parenting 101 class at La Canada Preschool. The topics we are looking to discuss, along with what emerges from the group, are positive discipline techniques, cooperation, routines, characteristics of development, and responsibility. What we want is to have a place where parents can come and feel supported for this overwhelming job of being a parent.

There were times when a class like this would be what saved me as a parent with just the knowledge that my child was not the only child acting out, being difficult and testing me on a daily basis. This class can begin a conversation in your home with the other co-parent as to what is it you are expecting and is it matching your child’s own temperament and developmental stage.

This class will meet for six weeks and the cost is $150.00.

Please consider joining myself and Janet Chadwick, a public school educator and mother of two grown children, for a class that will support you, encourage you and educate you.

Passing the Parenting Torch

As a mother of three and a preschool educator for twenty five years I feel compelled to pay it forward in the parenting world. When I was a young parent there was an enclave of educated people who guided me as the new member of their tribe, giving me the support that I was yearning for. My hope is that in this blog I can create that community for you.

In passing the parenting torch I want to develop a sense in young families that while we are come to the table with a different approach, I believe we are all alike in what we want to accomplish as parents. Creating capable and copable children is at the top of my list, along with a close relationship that can stand the test of raising a child.

So here we go. My mission is to let you know that I have been on your side of parenting and come out on the other end with children that are now adults, capable, copable and human beings that I am proud of everyday. This did not happen without tears and pain, yet we all survived somehow.

Let me know what you want to hear about. I will let you know what I have learned as a preschool teacher, an administrator and a mom. See you next week. Peace.DSC_7192
